Annual road tax island by island

It is the step most people forget: without the road tax receipt, the traffic authority will not register the car. And every town hall has its own rate and its own reductions.

First the tax, then the plates

The local finance act is clear: whoever applies for registration must evidence payment beforehand of the tax on mechanically powered vehicles. It is paid at the town hall of the address that will appear on the vehicle registration document, almost always by self-assessment, and on a first purchase it is pro-rated by calendar quarters: you pay the current quarter and the ones left in the year.

How much it is, town by town

The amount depends on the car's fiscal horsepower, not on its output in bhp. These are the annual rates for cars:

Fiscal horsepowerPalmaEivissaMaóFormentera
Less than 8€23.61€23.35€23.35€25.24
From 8 to 11.99€68.16€63.05€63.05€68.16

Palma, from the bylaw approved on 26 September 2024 (BOIB 165, of 17-12-2024), effective from 1 January 2025 and in force; Eivissa, from the 2025 bylaw, in force until it is amended; Formentera, from the bylaw published in the BOIB in 2021; Maó, from the table of rates the town hall itself publishes on its page for the tax, headed "PREUS 2015": the figures are the ones it publishes today, but we have not been able to confirm that they are still in force in 2026. Eivissa, from its bylaw (coefficient 1.85); the consolidated book of bylaws cannot be downloaded openly, and the band from 12 to 15.99 horsepower appears as €133.10 when the coefficient would give €133.09. Formentera, from the bylaw published in BOIB no. 167, of 4 December 2021: its PDF does not allow the text to be copied, so we have not been able to re-read it in this review. Honest conclusion: use them as an order of magnitude and confirm the exact amount when you sign the car up.

The green reductions vary a lot from one place to another

TownElectricHybridDo you have to apply for it?
Palma75 % (CERO sticker)50 % (ECO sticker)Automatically, if it appears on the DGT register
Eivissa30 %20 % (LPG too)Its bylaw does not regulate how to apply: ask when you sign the car up
Maó75 %75 %Yes: applied for when you self-assess
Formentera75 %50 %Yes, and under its bylaw within the month after registering

In Palma, a plug-in with 40 km or more of range comes in as CERO (75 %); with less, as ECO (50 %). If the car is electric or hybrid, this weighs a good deal more than any rate difference between towns.

Where you sign the car up

That Formentera goes through the ATIB while Palma, Eivissa and Maó do not is exactly the kind of detail that delays a registration by a couple of weeks if you find out too late.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register the car and pay the road tax afterwards?

No. The law requires payment to be evidenced beforehand, and the traffic authority asks for the receipt in order to register the car.

Do I pay the whole year if I buy in October?

No: on a first acquisition the amount is pro-rated by calendar quarters, counting the quarter of the purchase.

Where do I pay if I live in Formentera?

In Formentera the ATIB handles it with form 071. Palma, Eivissa and Maó have their own self-assessment systems.

Do the electric reductions have to be applied for?

It depends on the town: in Palma they are applied automatically if the sticker appears on the DGT Vehicle Register; in Maó you apply for them when you self-assess, and in Formentera within the month after registering.
