MINI NEXT360°At least 24 monthsEurope and the Asian part of Turkey
Porsche Approved111 pointsAt least 12 months and/or what is left of the new-car warrantyWorldwide, at any official Porsche Centre

*The Junge Sterne figure for passenger cars comes from a conditions PDF hosted by a dealer, not from Mercedes' own site: the official page loads that list with JavaScript and we could not read it. It is confirmed on the official Junge Sterne page for vans: "24 Monate Gebrauchtfahrzeuggarantie". We say so because the difference matters.

Why one BMW has 12 months and another has 24

This is the question we get asked most, and it has an exact answer. BMW and MINI used cars that are not in Premium Selection or NEXT carry a different warranty, EUROPlus: one year on all mechanical and electrical parts, up to 12 years and 200,000 km. And with one important difference in cover: it pays 100 % up to 100,000 km, then tapers (90 % between 100,000 and 120,000 km, and down to 50 % above 180,000 km).

So if you see a BMW at an official dealer with "12 months warranty", it is most likely not a Premium Selection car. Worth asking.

There is a second reason, and this one is in your favour: on a car under three years old, the 24 months of Premium Selection start when the factory 2+1 warranty ends. In other words, total cover from the day you buy can run past two years. The conditions say literally "mindestens 24 Monate": at least.

Porsche Approved is not 24 months

Worth being clear about, because it circulates wrongly. Porsche publishes "mindestens 12 Monate Porsche Approved Garantie und/oder die bestehende Neuwagengarantie": a minimum of twelve months, and/or whatever is left of the new-car warranty. It can be taken out for 12, 24 or 36 months with no mileage limit, and can be taken out until the car is 14 years old or has 200,000 km, with cover running to 15 years. No excess.

That is why, when we tell you how many months of warranty a particular car has, we read it off that car's file. We do not infer it from the programme.

What else each one includes

Two warnings and one thing we do not know

First warning: a brand warranty is not the statutory warranty. The programme's cover is added to your rights under § 476 and § 438 of the BGB, it does not replace them. The dealer is liable by law even where a commercial warranty exists.

Second: transferring the warranty to a new owner does not work on a trade resale. Mercedes and BMW both say so expressly. If an intermediary buys and resells the car, that is where it can be lost.

And what we do not know: whether a Junge Stern bought in Germany is entitled to the Spanish version's benefits (Mercedes Spain's 3 years, the 15-day swap). We have not found that they apply, and the logic of these programmes says the conditions of the country of purchase are what count. We would rather tell you that than promise it.

Frequently asked questions

How much warranty does BMW Premium Selection give?

At least 24 months on all mechanical and electrical parts, with no mileage limit. On cars under three years old those 24 months start when the factory 2+1 warranty ends, so total cover is longer.

Why does this BMW from an official dealer only have 12 months?

Because it is probably not a Premium Selection car but a used car with the EUROPlus warranty: one year, with tapering cover above 100,000 km.

Is Porsche Approved 24 months?

No. Porsche publishes a minimum of 12 months and/or whatever is left of the new-car warranty. It can be taken out for 12, 24 or 36 months with no mileage limit.

Is the warranty valid in Spain?

BMW Premium Selection: yes, the whole European Economic Area according to its official conditions PDF. MINI NEXT: Europe. Porsche Approved: worldwide. For Junge Sterne the country list includes Spain, but that document comes from a dealer, not from the brand site.

Can the warranty pass to the next owner?

Yes on a sale to a private buyer, both at Mercedes and at BMW. Not on a trade resale: both brands exclude it expressly.

How many points do they inspect?

Porsche publishes 111. BMW and MINI talk about a "360° Fahrzeugcheck" with 10 sections but publish no point count. Mercedes does not publish one for passenger cars either.
